12:00-3:00 pm – Meet and Greet with Serge Alternês (outside the Bookstore, NE corner)

Serge Alternês is an award-winning Canadian and French author. After a 40-year search for his father’s (Alec Wainman) 1,650 photographs of Civil War Spain, he is delighted to share this treasure with the world. In LIVE SOULS: Citizens and Volunteers of Civil War Spain, the people in the Spanish Civil War come alive in pacifist volunteer and Quaker Alec Wainman’s photos and vivid account of his experiences. The Catalan version of LIVE SOULS and recent Spanish ALMAS VIVAS have received much national and international acclaim. Serge divides his time between Vancouver and Europe presenting his books and father’s photographs. New identities of international volunteers and Spanish citizens are made weekly — their life stories further humanizing the struggle for Spain.
